CHAPTER 21

I must have misheard Reed. “What did you say?”

Reed walks to me and places a hand on my shoulder. “It turns out your dad put everything he had in a trust. That trust was split between you and Stacy. If anything happens to either of you, the money that hasn’t been paid out reverts to the trust, which will then go to Stacy.”

I shrug off his hand. “No, my dad knew what Stacy was trying to do. He never would have written a will like that. And he would have provided for my sister. When did my dad make this will?”

The idea of Summer beholden to Stacy for anything makes me sick. Fortunately, I learned she practically lives with our aunt and uncle.

Reed sighs. “Sadly, it’s an older will. He didn’t update it once he learned the truth about Stacy.”

I rub my temples. Maybe he did this before Summer was born. He never would have left her out of an inheritance. That’s the only way I can understand this. “His attorney confirmed he signed that will?”

Reed shook his head. “No, the will was drafted before Patterson took over the practice last year.”

“I can’t believe my dad didn’t update his will.”

Reed shoves his hands into his front pockets. “I can’t believe he didn’t share his suspicions about Stacy with me. I really wish I knew what he was thinking.”

So, do I. My dad never said an ill word about Stacy. I thought it was because he wanted to keep a good relationship between Summer and me. But clearly, he wanted me to know since he left those videos. Unless it all happened too fast. I never checked the date on those recordings.

“So, Stacy had my place ransacked, looking for evidence? And then she had someone try to abduct me from the RHS parking lot?”

“We don’t know what the ransacking was related to if anything,” Reed says.

Paxton barks out a laugh. “Come on. We do, too. All that was touched was her laptop and some movies. What we don’t know is if it was Stacy behind it or Officer Palmer or someone else.”

Stacy wants me dead. Is that why she asked Chet to date me? Was it really a ruse to get me somewhere alone and unprotected? But if she’s trying to kill me, why cut Lightning’s brakes? Was I the intended victim? No, she knew I was going to end things with him.

My mind is racing, going over all of my interactions with Stacy since my dad died. Although, it isn’t interactions with her I need to worry about. She would never do anything herself. No, she’d either hire someone or talk them into it somehow.

My poor dad was married to a monster. My eyes well with tears, and I walk to the back door and step out onto the deck. The guys don’t need to see me crying.

The backdoor opens behind me, but I don’t turn around. Reed is probably hoping to say some magic words, so I’ll feel better.
